Changing the lightblub
Shining a light on Australia’s first innovators. Icons of Australian Innovators project will create a suite of new icons for us to use for when we talk about innovation. Yes, Thomas Edison was a bright innovator with his invention of the lightbulb but why don’t we talk more about David Unaipon and is world leading invention the sheep shears or the fish trap by Ngemba Wayilwan people.
The project will digest and work with a first Nations designer to design icons for the most innovative designs from Corey Tutt’s book The First Scientists to turn those innovations into icons. These icons will be open sourced and uploaded into Canva. A campaign will follow to push re learning about First Nations innovators.
Why is it that we don’t feature life changing innovations that occurred on these lands 60 thousand years before Edison’s? Australian lands and seas were the backdrop for the First Scientists, revolutionising ways of living and working. Why don’t we celebrate the fish trap designed by Ngemba Wayilan people? Why isn’t David Unaipon’s world leading sheep shears proudly displayed on science textbooks?

We want to get it right but also keen to get on with it! Key blockers here are putting it out there, getting excitement, some funding and seeing how it goes. At this stage we think it would be less than $20k to get it off the ground from designer, project manager and advertising.
These icons are most relative to culture and country and representing the first innovations of this country.
